Salamanders, salamanders everywhere

On Saturday, March 3, a group of about twenty eager RMN members and friends hiked into the Maple Flats area of George Washington National Forest to seek for salamanders among the vernal sinkhole ponds there.  John Holden led the group, and the day proved to be perfect for salamander-spotting: cool and cloudy, and it had rained the night before.  Our careful lifting of logs and rocks yielded at least eight individual specimens of five separate species over about a three-hour span.
