Approved Stewardship Volunteer Projects
People who like being out in nature, getting dirty, and seeing tangible results of physical labor may help build and maintain park trails, restore wildlife habitat, or perform other stewardship-related projects. Rivanna chapter members should consult the listserv for a comprehensive description of each project.
- Albemarle County Parks - Trail Building and Maintenance
What: Assist with bulding and maintenance of multi-use trails
When: once a month; summer and fall
Where: Albemarle County parks
How: Leader will provide training and tools. - Albemarle County Schools - Trail Maintenance and Tree ID (Yancey Elementary) What: Identify and label trees along trail and maintain as needed.
When: Ongoing
Where: BF Yancey Elementary School in Albemarle County
How: Knowledge of trees expected.
- Charlottesville Parks - Invasive Plant Management
What: Lead volunteer groups to control invasive plants
When: November - March; half days
Where: Charlottesville City parks and school grounds
How: Work with city staff; need ability to identify invasive plants - Ivy Creek Natural Area - Trail Monitor
What: Trail monitors adopt a trail to walk regularly
When: Monthyly and after storms.
Where: Ivy Creek or Ragged Mountain Natural Area
How: On-the-trails training provided. - National Audubon Society - SNP Invasive Species Removal
What: The project involves physically removing a variety of non-native plant species from select areas. Leadership role is encouraged.
When: Ongoing;
Where: Shenandoah National Park
How: Training for plant ID, tool use, and precautions is provided by SNP staff
- Rivanna Conservation Society - Riparian Buffer Planting
What: Plant riparian buffers along threatened stream beds.
When: ongoing; primarily spring and fall
Where: Rivanna River watershed
How: Training provided by RCS.
- Rivanna Trails Foundation - Monthly Workdays
- Senior Center Habitat Enhancement
What: Access wildlife area, propose improvements and lead a habitat enhancement project with senior volunteer help.
When: 2007
Where: RTF trail next to Senior Center and grounds
How: No training provided; some supplies provided
- Virginia Native Plant Society, TJ Chapter - Native Plant Care
What: Plant and care for native wild plants in public areas.
When: As needed; ongoing care
Where: Rivanna Chapter geographic boundaries

What: Dig up native plants where threatened to replant in public area.
