Useful Websites for the Study of Trees
Spring 2008: by Tony Russell, Rivanna Master Naturalist
I hope this annotated list of tree websites provides a handy guide for many users. Trees have a special place in my heart, and my underlying motive for creating this list is to help other people learn to know and value them too.
The list represents a culling from hundreds of sites that might have been selected. The three most important criteria for inclusion were:
- usefulness for a variety of potential users, including naturalists, teachers and students at many levels, and members of the general public;
- relevance to Virginia residents in particular, although I’ve felt comfortable going farther afield, since most species of trees and shrubs have a fairly wide range of distribution; and
- coverage of a variety of topics, starting with identification and “branching out” to other topics like photos of trees, invasive species, riparian and urban forestry, tree health, American chestnuts, and comprehensive forestry.
