6. Riparian Forestry

  1. Riparian Zone Tree Plantings
A one-page article from the University of Idaho Extension. Defines riparian zones, explains why they are ecologically important, and provides lists of flood tolerant and very flood tolerant species.

  2. Forest Management and Stream Organisms: Role of Trees in Aquatic Food Webs
Excellent discussion of the role of forest management in improving environmental quality for stream organisms, thus sustaining and promoting aquatic biodiversity. Somewhat academic style, but readable.

  3. Riparian Zone Stability Assessment
A textbook-like presentation of “a set of materials for landowners and managers who want to learn more about managing their riparian areas.” The materials enable users to analyze the factors affecting a riparian area and make appropriate decisions on ways to improve practices.

  4. Missouri Bottomland Tree Species
A handy field guide to bottomland tree species in tabular form, selecting appropriate species for reforestation based on ecological adaptations and environmental tolerances. Covers fifty-two species. Summarizes information from seven different sources.
