The Rivanna Chapter of the Virginia Master Naturalists was founded in April 2006, chartered in June 2006, and organized its first training by fall of that same year.

Since then, the Rivanna Chapter of VMN has held a total of six trainings and members have logged over 20,000 volunteer hours.
In 2012, the Rivanna chapter had:
- 146 trained Master Naturalists
- 125 active members
- 64 Certified Master Naturalists
- 1,524 Advanced Training hours from 84 members
- 6,084 volunteer hours in 2012
